NEMA Enclosures

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) publishes standards, application guides, and technical papers on a wide range of topics related to electrical enclosures, product function, and safety. These standards help U.S. manufacturers ensure the compatibility, proper function, and safety of their products. NEMA does not test the products; rather, it uses a standard rating system that defines the types of environments in which an electrical enclosure can be used. It also signifies the enclosure’s ability to withstand certain environmental conditions. NEMA enclosures are assigned an alphanumeric designator from 1 to 13 based on their attributes. At American Products, we manufacture indoor and outdoor cabinets that meet or are designed to NEMA type 1, 3R, 4, and 6.

Why NEMA Ratings Matter

A manufacturer’s compliance with NEMA standards is entirely voluntary. But at American Products, we believe using set standards for electrical and telecommunications equipment benefits the user as well as the manufacturer. NEMA enclosures and their ratings signify an enclosure’s ability to withstand certain environmental conditions. They improve safety, economics, and communication between the company and its customers.

In short, a NEMA standard defines each type of enclosure based on its attributes and capabilities. Ultimately, these standards can help you find an enclosure that fits all of your design requirements and works well for your business.

NEMA Enclosures

NEMA 1

NEMA 1 enclosures are constructed for indoor use only. They provide a degree of protection to personnel against access to hazardous parts and a degree of protection to the equipment inside the enclosure against ingress of solid foreign objects (falling dirt). At American Products, our MTR series indoor repeaters are designed to meet the NEMA 1 enclosure standard.

NEMA 3R

NEMA 3R enclosures are constructed for indoor and outdoor use. When completely and properly installed, they protect personnel from accessing hazardous electrical parts. In addition, 3R enclosures protect your equipment from harsh outdoor elements, such as foreign objects (falling dirt), rain, sleet, snow, and external ice.

NEMA 3R Options at American Products:

NEMA 4

Similar to NEMA 3R enclosures, NEMA 4 enclosures are weatherproof units that are constructed for either indoor or outdoor use. Choosing a type 4 cabinet over type 3R gives you the added benefit of protection against windblown dust, splashing water, and hose-directed water.

NEMA 4 Options at American Products:

NEMA 6

NEMA 6 enclosures are also constructed for either indoor or outdoor use. Choosing a type 6 cabinet over type 4 gives you the added benefit of protection against the entry of water during occasional, temporary submersion at a limited depth. At American Products, our Liberty Nautilus series cabinets are designed to meet the NEMA 6 enclosure standard.

Climate Control for NEMA Enclosures

When you choose NEMA enclosures for your indoor or outdoor telecommunications equipment, you can rest assured that your investments are safeguarded from ice damage and the harmful effects of most common environmental conditions. Plus, if you choose to add insulation or climate control to your enclosure, you will enjoy the following added benefits:

  • Extra protection against humidity
  • Protection against overheating and freezing
  • Minimal worry about pests, temperature damage, or corrosion
