Stainless Steel Enclosures
Stainless steel enclosures are made of stainless or galvanized steel. They are often preferred to other materials because they offer increased corrosion protection against environmental elements, while also providing a polished appearance and minimal maintenance. Stainless steel is a non-standard enclosure option that is available for most enclosures at American Products.
Benefits of Stainless Steel Enclosures
With a variety of grades and surface finishes, stainless steel can accommodate diverse application requirements while providing necessary protection and performance. However, it is important to understand your environment and the steel-grade properties of the enclosure before selecting stainless steel over other alternatives, such as plastics or composites.
Form and Flexibility
We use type 304 stainless steel for our enclosures, hardware, and locking mechanisms, and we employ galvanized stainless steel for select enclosures. Galvanized steel is stainless steel coated in layers of zinc oxide. The coating gives the steel a more durable, hard-to-scratch finish that many people find attractive.
Type 304 is the most widely used stainless steel in the industry because it has good forming and welding properties, offers great drawability, and can be formed into a variety of shapes without annealing. Additionally, it can accommodate diverse application requirements while providing excellent protection.
Increased Corrosion Protection
Because stainless steel does not readily corrode, it can be used in a variety of applications where strength and corrosion resistance are required. Stainless steel remains stainless, or does not rust, because of the interaction between its alloying elements and the environment. The presence of a stable, outer film on the material prevents corrosion by acting as a barrier that limits oxygen and water access to the underlying metal surface. Because we use stainless steel in many of our locking mechanisms, you get a reliable seal that protects electrical components from corrosive environments.
The attractive and hygienic surface appearance of stainless steel products cannot be regarded as completely maintenance-free. However, the material requires very little maintenance since it will not rust easily in the field. In fact, the frequency and cost of cleaning stainless steel is lower than many other materials, and this will often outweigh higher acquisition costs.
As a material, stainless steel is theoretically 100 percent recyclable (source). Furthermore, the amount of recycled stainless steel in any stainless object is approximately 60 percent (source). Stainless steel enclosures are engineered to have a long life, often spanning over several decades. The longevity of stainless steel makes it an ideal environmental performer and a premium material choice for your telecommunications cabinet.
