The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) defines enclosure ratings that describe the level of environmental protection a product provides. Here’s what the most relevant ratings mean for renewable energy deployments:

NEMA 3R

NEMA 3R enclosures are designed for outdoor use and provide protection against rain, sleet, and ice formation. They are a common choice for renewable energy applications where protection from precipitation is the primary concern, but corrosion resistance is not required.

NEMA 4

NEMA 4 enclosures provide a higher level of protection than 3R — including resistance to windblown dust and rain, splashing water, and hose-directed water. They are suitable for outdoor renewable energy installations in more demanding weather environments.

NEMA 4X

NEMA 4X enclosures offer all the protection of NEMA 4, with the addition of corrosion resistance. A NEMA 4X stainless steel enclosure is a common specification for coastal or high-humidity environments where corrosion is a long-term risk — including many solar and wind energy sites.
